After nearly 20 years of working in textiles, specially silk, textile artist Sigrun Lara Shanko turned her artistic mind to rug making. There she can broaden her skills using the technique of hand tufting derived from the original method she learned from her mother as a teenager. Always breaking the mould she created demand for her works in her teenage years. However she had other things in life to pursuit and the tufting needle was set a site only to be rediscovered at a later date in rug making.
The rivers in the rugged Icelandic landscape are the inspiration for the “River” collection where fluid forms shifts with rich colours in the artist unique timeless hand tufted rugs.
Sit-on-Iceland the mini rug.
The inspiration for the Sit-on Iceland collection comes from the need to have something soft, luscious, durable and damp resistant to sit on while roaming in the wilderness of Iceland. The little mini rugs can also travel anywhere in the world with you as unique fun piece of Iceland. When designing the Sit-on-Iceland the artist looks closer at the earth we stand on, the basalt rocks, the formation of moss, the lava partly under snow, the “thufa”, the black sand of Vik and other striking natural characters that make up the Icelandic nature.
The two founders of Elivogar, Sigrun Lara Shanko and Sigga Olafs collaborated in the collection Rivers were invited to participate and exhibit their collection at “ÖÖ-was-it-a-dream Authentic luxury” to celebrate Helsinki as the World Capital of Design 2012. At the end of the exhibition the rugs where requested by the Icelandic Ambassador in Finland to be exhibited as part of “Dialogue” at the residency as example of Icelandic design for the duration of the year 2012. Then at the Kultur Kontakt Nord in Helsinki until March 15th 2013. At last the rugs where exhibited at the Innovation Centre Iceland in Reykjavik until end of May 2013.
